I could not find any prior chess engine in TeX (I searched CTAN, GitHub, and TeX Stack Exchange). There exist LaTeX packages for rendering chess positions and games (the excellent chessboard and xskak packages), but nothing that actually plays chess. TeXCCChess appears to be the first.
